■The United Nations

The United Nations was officially established in 1945. The U.N. is centering some nations of won in the Second World War.
A member nations of U.N. are 192, Japan became a member of the U.N. in 1956.

The U.N. is made up of 6 important agencies and other subsidiary organ.

●Important agencies

1, The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
2, The United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
3, The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
4, Trusteeship Council (But, there were broke off activity in 1994, because necessary activities is almost completed.)
5, The International Court of Justice (ICJ)
6, Secretariat


●Specialty agencies

- the International Labor Organization (ILO)
- Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
- United Nations Educational, and Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
- World Health Organization (WHO)
- International Development Association (IDA)
- the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development)
- International Monetary Fund (IMF)
- Constitution of the Universal Postal Union (UPU)
- International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
- World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
- United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
etc….


An official language of U.N. is English, French, Chinese, Russian, Spanish and Arabic. A statement in formal meeting and formal document are translated into these official languages. A front office of U.N. is NY, but using British English.
For example, If write for paper, must write "24 October 1990", not write "October 24, 1990"


●Main activities are three.

1, Arm control and reduction in armaments.

2, Peacekeeping
Peacekeeping is most important activity in U.N. This activity is provided in the Charter of the United Nations.

3, Human rights
In the Second World War, many people were cruelly murdered. The U.N. is making up some activities that won’t happen again.


●the U.N. and Japan

Now, Japan bear 16.624% financial contributions to the United Nations, but Japan is not permanent member of the U.N. security council. However Japan often late for pay, and Japan can't resorted to force in abroad.


●If you were working for the U.N., which job would like to do using your English abilities? Why?

If I can work for the U.N., I want to work in UNESCO. Because, I interest in education and peace. UNESCO is calling peace for the world through education, science and culture. In the world, many people can't study now. If I work in UNESCO, Ican active about education and peace, and I may give education and peace for many people.
