#7 Homework

1.Have you ever eaten in a restaurant in a foreign country? Where? What did you eat? Did you make any mistakes? Please explain your experience.

When I went to America, I went to restaurant. I eat steak in stake.
This restaurant is not high rank. But, some fork and spoon were kept likes high rank restaurant.
I know use fork and spoon from the outside.
But, I 'm not convinced of manner of meal. I tremble with fear ;p


2. Did you learn anything?
I can't think of a good idea.

#6 Homewoek

About Camila's presentation.
I don't know about Denmark.
But I heard Camila's presentation, I'm very interested.
I most surprise about put fruit jam(?) on the rice!!!!!
I don't believe it!!!!!
But, Camila and Meiki said "It's very good taste."!!!!
I think food style varies with country.
If I have a chance, I want to eat put jam on the rice maybe....


1.Since Japanese weddings are expensive, do you think having a massive wedding like Korea or UAE is a good idea? Why?

I think massive wedding is unnecessary.

I image massive wedding (a lot of direction, many invite guests, beautiful dress, luxurious foods and so on) is very commercialize. I have question, how many people heartily congratulate for a couple? and Why should I have massive wedding?
I want to have wedding ceremony that all people heartily congratulate for me.
If ceremony is very small, I don't mind it.
Feeling is more important than formalities.



2. What do you think about eloping? Is it a good idea or romantic? Why?

Eloping is very romantic!
I think eloping is a good idea. I have never meet a couple who elope, so eloping is not reality.
But, I image couple who elope have very deep love!! They can stick to love!!!
I think very wonderful!!
But, if a couple elope, they can't meet family and life is difficulty. maybe...


3. Have you ever thought about having a wedding in a foreign location like Hawaii? Would you do it? Why?Or Why not?

Yes, I had.
Wedding in a foreign location is very wonderful and dream.
I read a lot of magazine, web site or TV foreign location and church are very beautiful!! If I can wedding with this location, maybe I feel happy!!
But, wedding in a foreign country is very expensive!



4.What is your ideal wedding?

I don't want to have wedding ceremony because I'm very shy.
In wedding ceremony, I am always looked and take picture from family and friends.
I can't bear this situation!!
So, I want to hold a party to invite few friends and choose my favorite restaurant, (likes 二次会)
and I get married at a great church only groom and I.



5.What would you definitely do, wear or go to on that big day? Why is that important?

I wear beautiful dress, make up my face, and go to salon shop.
Because, I want to dress up in big day!! It's very important!!


6. Have you ever been to a foreigner's wedding? What was your impression?

No, I haven't.
But I look foreigner's wedding on TV and movies. My impression is that foreign wedding is very holiness.
Many Japanese people don't believe Christ, but many couples take wedding at a church.
Form is like christian wedding, but I don't feel that there is not Gog.

1.Do you think it is important to talk about superstitions in cross culture communication class? Why?
No. I think superstitions is not important, but foreign country's superstitions is very interesting.
It is not topic that we certainly talk, but if we takl about it, we can talk enjoy.

2.Is communication affected by superstitions?
I think superstitions is not affected to communication.

3.Do you believe in superstitions? If yes, what superstitions do you believe?Why do you do, use, or believe in them?
I don't believe in superstitions, but I often say it.
For example, if I give a cold for friend, I can cured.
If we eat Wakame or kelp, hear is increased.

Today's class is about the different concepts of time in different cultures. For homework, please answer the following in your blog:

1. Please explain a time proverb in your culture.
I think Japanese people care about time.
Many proverb of time are wrote about time is very important.


2. What do the following proverbs mean:
a. Time is money.

「時は金なり」
This proverb meaning is "time is very important and precious".
So, don't waste our time!


b. A stitch in time saves nine.
「今日の1針あすの10針/ 早めに1針縫っておけばほころびてから9針縫う手間が省ける」
This proverb meaning is "prepared ahead of time is very important!".
If we get prepare ahead of time, we are not panic when it is too late.

c. There's no time like the present.
「いまこそ好機だ」
When we are said when we must make haste.

d.Let's meet at 4. If I'm not there by 5, leave without me at 6, and I'll be there at 7.
Soryy, I don't understand this meaning.

1. Do you judge people according to what they wear? Why?

Yes.

For example.... a person wear clorful clothes, I think she has a perswonality.
a person wear clothes of lost popularity I think she/ he is stranger or negative.
a person wear showy clothes I think she/ he is cheerful or can assert oneself.

I think we judge people by their looks. So, judge people by clothes is very usually.
I think clothe express person's character. "What color..., What wear..." is very important!!
Clothes is one of thing to judge character.


2. Do you think Japanese society puts an importance on clothing when judging other people from another country?

Yes, it is one of very important things.


3. What colors are you wearing now? Do they reflect your mood?



Now,I wearing black clothes.

If my mind is very bad, I wear dark color clothes.

If my mind is very good or high, I wear light color clothes.

1.a. Do you have any international friends or a host family? If so, how would you express your condolences to them if a family member died? If not, then how would you express condolences to an American host family if their Grandmother died?

No, I haven't.
If I hear that my host family's grandmother died, I send a message.
I writte that "I'm very sad. I want to meet her again. I can't go to funeral, I pray her soul may rest in peace." or I call famly.

Then, if I can go to America, I meet host family, and I talk grandmother's memories with family.

b. Have you ever been to a foreign funeral?
No.


2. The language of Clothes (preparation for next weeks topic)
a.Why are Japanese designer label crazy? Why is what you wear so important?

I think it have few reasons.
1, Designer label is very cute.
Designer labes is always latest fashion. Japanese people are very sensitive to fahion.
SO, wear least fashion is very important for Japanese people.

2, Many Japanese people read fashion magazin.
Many kind of designer label clothes is introduced in fashion magazin. So, Japanese people buy clothes after read magazine.
And, clothes that favorite fashion model wear is in sight very cute. This is one
of the important reason.

3, Wear designer label clothes is very cool.

4, Designer label clothes is always talked in our. If she wear not designer label, possibly she
can't talk with her friends.

#1 Homework

Do you agree with the web site's description?What do you do that can be called "wrapping"? Give examples and reasons for your actions.

Japanese people are always wrapping something.
Now, I work in spermarket. There sell many kind of goods. Many goods are wrapped than needs. For example, box of cookies. First cookie was wrapped by small snack, second many group of cookies wrapped by big snask, then box of cookie was wrapped by wrapping paper, finally put bok of cookie in a paper bag.
Many Japanese people are very nervous temperament. (Especially food.) So, they feel relieve from wrapping and express respect for person.

I always declined to wrapping more than need especially buy my goods.



a. Where do you go when you die?

I think I go to second world after death.
I can continue to live in second world and can watch my family.
So, I was always watched by my dead family.


b. Explain why do Japanese have death memorial services 1 month, 1 year, 3 years, 7 years, etc. after a person's death?

We express mind of memorial service in the form.
We hold a service for a dead person.

Memorial service (1 year, 3 year...) have a relation to Japanese Got.
Each yeach has Got.
Dead pearson was read each Got.
We guide dead person to Got by memorial service.

If I can work for the U.N., I want to work in UNESCO. Because, I interest in education and peace. UNESCO is calling peace for the world through education, science and culture. In the world, many people can't study now. If I work in UNESCO, Ican active about education and peace, and I may give education and peace for many people.

I think equality of the sexes is very important thing.

I want to work in Finland.
In Finland, the many womans going into labor market and work full-time.
In addition, many womas going into goverment.
Woman's rank is very high.

In Japan, housework is woman's work. Now, many people divide housework, but housework is still woman's work.

But, In Finland,

-the man who can't do housework, he is bad person.
-If woman have a baby, she can take child-care leave about 265 days. Of cause, hasband
can take child-care leave about 2 weeks.
In addition, they are provided salary of 80 %.
-Finland have many day-care center.

Finland have some system that support woman's work style.
Woman can work with child care.
These things is very charming.

I think character is most important, because I believe good character can makes good human relations. Also I think good character person have a lot of friends. I respect such a man. Next, Job is second important thing. We must get money for live, and I think person who work hard is very cool. We can't live only love. Then looks is third important thing. It is included personal appearance. Don't you think that we can't get good impression from bad appearance person? Then mind-set and common senseis fourth important thing. If we can't muches mind-set and common senseis with partner, we can't spend long time. Final, life style and hobby is fifth important thing. I separate the life style from the hobby, but as the two items are same. If my hobby and lifestyle differs greatly with partner, we find common things difficult. It is not funny.

1.Are feelings, emotions and facial expressions universal across borders, happy, sad, etc..?
I think feelings and emotion are same things, but them and facial expressions are different. In some cases, many people doesn’t show emotions in face. Especially, Japanese people hide them emotions, and they read the situation.


2. Try to name as many feelings as possible in Japanese. ( 10 minimum) Then, write the English translation.

<萌え>
This word is very modern word. This got abroad among Japanese people from Akihabara. First, it was used with Japanese Otaku. When they looked favorite anime character, manga, game and so on, they said “moe~”!! They express pleasure, deep and excite with “moe~”. But, now this word is used many people in the world.

<困惑>
This word is expressed “be in a fix” and I don’t know what I should do.

<うざい>
This word is expressed some means that trouble, angry, mad and so on.

1, How do yougreet menbers of your family?
When I greet for family, I don 't special greet.
I use informal words for all family.

2, How do you greet that are important in society?
I use honorific words and perform formal bows.

3, DO you greet people from the opposite sex in a different way?
No. I don't change the way of greet for opposite sex. It has nothing to me that opposite sex.

4, Do you hug anyone?
No. I don't hufg for anyone because I feel ashamed. Especially, I hug for Japanese people.
But I hug foreigner, I don't feel ashamed much.

Homework #3

How do you greet people in your life?
When I greet people, I say “こんにちは”, “おはよう”. Sometimes I make a bow and wave.
But, it is doing for special person.

Is it different for different people? How so and why?
When I meet a first time to someone, I use a polite manner of speaking and I make a bow. It is common sense that use a polite manner of speaking. If I don’t use a polite manner of speaking, it is very impolite.
But, when I greet for friends, I use informal words. (For example, I say “おはよう” for friends, but I don’t say “おはようございます”.) I don’t shake a hand, make a bow and use formal words for friends. So, I change the way of greetings by the situation.

Do you touch people when you talk to them? Why? Or Why not?
No, I don’t. When I talk to someone, I keep a good distance from them. I think, touching body is very familiar and we should looking eyes of person.

How is your daily life affected by Buddhism?

○いただきます
When we eat a food, we say “Itadakimasu”. When we were children, our parents taught us “You should say Itadakimasu”. This word was included thanks for all things. Food, producer, life… “Itadakimasu” originated with Buddhism. We usually doesn’t mind the life from foods. But, we can’t live without other life. We say “Itadakiamsu”, and we should mind thanks for life.

○Bon <お盆>
In Japan, many people prepare for Bon in August. This day, we greet an ancestor, and we render great service to ancestor. I think, we living now by the grace of ancestor. This day, we can feel a connection with ancestor. I think we must value the Bon.

○Yoga <ヨガ>
Now, many people are doing Yoga in Japan. When we are doing yoga, we feel good, can maintain health, looking back upon our life. We think Yoga is one way of health care. But, originally it was introduced from Buddhism in India, and it was one way of training. Maybe, many people didn’t know these things.

○visit to a grave <墓参り>
We visit to a grave in special day. We clean a grave, tell the thanks for ancestor, and we wish that we can spend good time. Sometimes, we visit there with Buddhist priest and we were read a sutra by him. Recently, the people who visit to a grave is now decreasing. But, I think when we visit to grave, we can cleanse my heart. Why we can live now? It was connected life from ancestor.

When we tell someone thanks, we say ありがとう in Japanese. Originally it was Buddhism too. First, this word mean, born is rare. Then it was changed. Now, it mean is thanks. “Thank you” is easy telling someone thanks, and it is best way to can telling thanks. Now, many people can’t say “Thank you”. But if we don’t say “Thank you”, human relation was broken off. “Thank you” is very important word.

I report article about make the new proposal of organ transplant.
Now, we can donate an internal organ from over 15 years old in Japan. But, it is a symptom that for children under 14 years of age can’t take organ transplant operation.

They should go abroad and take an organ transplant in there.
Many people complained about change the organ transplant law.

This time, the government grappled to changing of organ transplant.
If this bill approved, many people can get the chance of the organ transplant. But, determination of brain death of the children is very difficult things and “death” is sensitive problem. So, it is pushed forward carefully now.
The government compiles a plan by the consecutive
holidays and aims at the voting in May.
